| abstract |
This British Geological Survey (BGS) regional marine geophysical and sampling survey took place May to June 1972 in Moray Firth, off Aberdeenshire and Forth Approaches on board the MV Whitethorn. Sea floor data were collected using an echo sounder and transit sonar. Subsurface data were gathered using pinger and sparker equipment, a total of 531km were covered. Seabed samples and cores were collected using a shipek grab, gravity corer, vibrocorer, shell and auger and wireline drilling equipment. 9 borehole sites were occupied. Additional geophysical records (Line 61) were collected for Survey 72/W3 by MGU onboard ‘MV Researcher’ Survey 1972/4. These data are archived by BGS. Technical details of the survey are contained in BGS Internal Report WB/72/7.
